- For younger children in Year 3: These group tuition sessions last for one hour and the cost is £25. These shorter sessions are reserved for younger children due to their concentration levels.

Notice must be given for missed sessions. Any sessions missed can be caught up at other available times in the week. If this is not practical, then there is a charge of half price for the missed lesson and the work must be picked up and completed in time for the next lesson. It is the duty and responsibility of both parent(s) and pupil to ensure attendance.
I am a dedicated professional. My goal is the same as yours and, in order to achieve that goal, I am prepared to go that extra mile. Parents can and do contact me about their worries and difficulties or for general advice at all times, and I try to accommodate them. I am not a 9-5 tutor, nor do I just work during the teaching sessions. Each year I try to improve my services and to build on my ongoing experiences. I keep records and notes so that I have a comprehensive understanding of each child. Above all, I try to make learning fun and to encourage a thirst for knowledge that will stand them in good stead, not just for the 11+, but for the future.
Yes, they are. Richard holds a Masters degree in education from Birmingham University and taught in mainstream schools for over twenty years. He is also an ex-examiner for Key Stage 2 tests and has over twenty years’ experience at private tuition.
Mike holds a maths degree from Warwick University and was Head of Mathematics at a local secondary school for twenty-five years and has been a marker for many GCSE and A-Level examination boards.
Amy qualified as a teacher from Leeds University in 2012. She has over fifteen years experience of working in several schools in both the primary and secondary sectors. She currently works at a local grammar school in Sutton Coldfield as well as her tutor role at Sutton Tutorials.
Between the three of us, we have over eighty years of teaching experience!
So many children are tutored today, making the competition for grammar school places much more difficult. Most children require focused, rigorous and competitive preparation which will ensure that they perform to their maximum potential on the day of the tests. Unless your child is naturally brilliant, I think it’s fair to say that some form of familiarisation is an absolute must. If you can do this job yourself, you are among the happy few who will be able to, without either falling out or having a nervous breakdown!
Every child has a comprehensive consultation and assessment before they start. This gives us insight into their background, and an understanding of their interests and abilities. It enables us to put your child in the correct group and, in terms of the 11 plus, whether or not a pass is likely. We will give you an honest assessment.
On the whole we do very little 1:1 tutoring, preferring to take small classes. The 11+ is after all very competitive, and in my experience, children try harder to improve when pitting themselves against others in a friendly and encouraging environment.
Each year varies of course, but usually 90% of the students I expect to pass do get through. Our success rate is excellent, but even if your child’s ability is not of 11+ standard, the tutoring will always be beneficial to their schoolwork.
If you wish to speak to us about your child’s progress, this is normally best done by phone rather than at the end of every lesson. We will regularly talk to you about the progress your child has made, listen to your views and discuss how we can develop in the weeks to come.
Homework is given at the end of each session and will take about 1-1 ½ hours weekly to complete. Schoolwork comes first, of course, but a certain level of commitment is required here. This will also act as a preparation for working in a grammar school situation where homework plays a very important part.
Grammar schools are state secondary schools, which select their pupils by means of an examination taken by children at age 11, known as the 11 Plus. Pupils who pass the exam go to the local grammar school, while pupils who do not go to the local secondary modern school.
Most parts of the UK do not have an explicitly selective education system of this sort. More common is the “comprehensive” system, in which pupils of all abilities and aptitudes are taught together.
There are around 164 grammar schools in England and a further 69 in Northern Ireland. There are no state grammars in Wales or Scotland and although some retain the name ‘grammar school’, they are non-selective and have no special status.
The majority of grammar schools teach pupils aged between 11 and 18, having integrated sixth forms that teach A Levels and equivalent post-16 courses. “Sixth forms” of this sort are far more unusual in comprehensive schools.
Aptitude The pupil must have the aptitude necessary to perform well-above average in the subjects tested. Tuition and effort will not compensate for insufficient aptitude. If in doubt, come along for an assessment and we will give you our honest opinion as to your child’s academic potential.
Attitude The pupil must be prepared to put in lots of effort throughout the course. It is a competitive exam and the children will have to be prepared to work hard to be successful.
Knowledge & Skills The pupil needs expert instruction in the relevant skills and knowledge. Our proven course provides this in a small-group format, in a well-structured and very successful way.
Performance The pupil must perform well on exam day. There is little any parent can do other than ensuring your child is fresh, healthy and free from worry and distractions. Try not to pass your nerves onto them!
A grammar school is a suitable environment for children who are academically able and who can rise to a fast pace of learning and a heavy workload. Children who perform well-above average in numeracy and literacy at school are likely to cope best with the considerable demands of grammar school. Children with about average levels of attainment in Key Stage 2 are likely to find the high expectations and pressure in a grammar school overwhelming: this can be highly detrimental to a child’s confidence.

I couldn’t be happier with the 11 Plus tutoring my child received! The tutors were knowledgeable, patient, and really understood how to bring out the best in each student. My child said the lesson atmosphere was great and he loved learning with Katy. Thanks to their excellent support and guidance, my child passed the 11 Plus with flying colours. My daughter has been having lessons with Richard for a few years and has always enjoyed them. The sessions are well-paced, engaging, with a healthy dose of competition. Thanks to his excellent teaching, she achieved a great score in her exam and has secured a place at her first choice of grammar school. Richard has always been approachable and quick to respond to any queries. Homework was manageable and helped to reinforce what was covered in lessons. My daughter always looked forward to her class each week. If a lesson couldn’t be attended, Richard was very flexible and allowed us to swap to another session in the week when there was availability, which was really helpful. The mock exams were of very high quality, and the feedback provided was much more detailed and helpful than other mock providers we tried. This allowed us to identify and focus on weaker areas. We’re very grateful for all the support and would highly recommend Sutton tutorials!Posted on Gemma Lennon20 October 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I highly recommend Richard at Sutton Tutorials for 11+ tutoring. My daughter attended throughout year 5, and the course was very well structured, steadily building her knowledge and confidence in a supportive and encouraging environment. She also took part in their mock exams, which proved to be an extremely valuable addition in helping her prepare for the 11+ exam. Thank you Richard.Posted on lucy makin18 October 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our daughter started lessons in year 4 and has just received an excellent score in the 11+ exam. We did no extra work other than what she did with Richard and Mr Thorsby and we were happy that there was not excessive amounts of work to complete throughout the week. She really enjoyed the lessons themselves and had lots of fun as both Richard and Mr Thorsby are not intense and are kind and encouraging rather than adding to pressure and anxiety. We believe this is why she did so well! I would definitely recommend trying to do a couple of the mock exams. Exam technique plays a big part and she actually never did particularly well on them but Richard checked her paper specifically and it transpired that she had been filling out the answer sheets incorrectly-they really do go the extra mile. Even if she hadn’t have got the result we hoped for the process was so brilliant as it has built confidence, resilience and commitment to learning. Thank you so much to everyone within the Sutton Tutorials team!Posted on Shana Janan17 October 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Exceptional Tutor Richard We cannot recommend Richard highly enough. Choosing his 11+ classes was, without a doubt, the single best decision we made for our daughter's preparation. His support led directly to truly transformative results. Our daughter achieved a very high score in her 11+, securing the strong foundation we had hoped for. More significantly, Richard’s teaching was absolutely instrumental in navigating the highly rigorous and competitive entrance process for the Henrietta Barnett School (HBS), one of the top girls' grammar schools in the country. She successfully passed Stage 1 of the HBS exam. To fully appreciate the magnitude of this achievement, Stage 1 involved over 7,000 applicants, with only the top 300 candidates progressing. We credit Richard's outstanding teaching skills and focused preparation entirely for this success. Beyond the academic outcomes, what truly sets Richard apart is the incredible rapport he built with our daughter. She genuinely loved his sessions, which is evidenced by her commitment: she missed only one lesson and collected the work in two full years of classes. This dedication comes from a teacher who makes learning engaging and effective. For anyone who wants their child to achieve good marks in the 11+ and navigate highly competitive grammar school entry, Richard is highly recommended.Posted on Juan “爱美神” cheng17 October 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My absolutely love Richard ‘s tutoring he said he is funny and kind and very patient and professional as result My son got a good score in the 11 plus .reality appreciate highly recommendPosted on Andrew Millington17 October 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used Sutton Tutorials to prepare our daughter for her 11+. We started in year 4 I think although you may be able to start in year 3 and we cannot recommend them enough. Our daughter was already very clever and a very confident mathematician, but her comprehension and vocabulary needed work and when it came to verbal and non verbal reasoning you may as well have been speaking in riddles, it was totally new to her. Richard was her tutor throughout and she warmed to him instantly. Richard was approachable, very informative to us as parents and really helped guide Leila through her tuition journey without her feeling the pressure of the exam that was to come. Weekly homework was given to complete and towards the end of our time using ST they released a daily test “app” with daily tests to help keep your child’s knowledge sharp (extra fee applied for that). Mock exams are very useful (extra fees apply) and help the children understand where they are in regards to passing the 11+. Terms and conditions are more than fair for missed lessons, fees are reasonable, conditions for the children doing their lessons are good and parking, while on a residential street, was never a problem (as long as parents parked considerately and didn’t hang around for the duration of their child’s lesson). All in all, our daughter got a very good score in her 11+ exam. We always knew she was capable of it, Richard told us as much the day she started at ST and while she worked hard, she’d wouldn’t have gotten a result quite like she did without the help of Sutton Tutorials. We were totally satisfied with the journey our daughter went through, even before the 11+ had been taken. Don’t see it as a means to pass the 11+, see it as a way to help give your child a step up in their education wherever they go to school.
