Tuition Services in Sutton Coldfield
We offer a variety of tuition services which cover most needs for both primary and secondary pupils. Our popular Foundation Course is aimed at children in Years 3 and 4 to secure a better understanding of Maths and English.
The work covered also acts as an introduction to the 11 Plus tuition course, which runs for a year, for children in Year 5. We also cater for those children wishing to take entrance examinations for the independent schools.
Tuition in Maths for Secondary School Students
For secondary children, we are able to offer classes in Maths. It is our mission to prepare students to help build up their knowledge of the subject while in-depth examination preparation helps pupils transfer their knowledge in the form of a written assessment.
Having mastered both, pupils will have the right credentials to excel in their examinations.
We offer maths GCSE examination tuition and A-Level examination tuition.

Sara Thorsby established Sutton Tutorials in 1980. She was committed to maintaining the excellent reputation of the company, won through the delivery of a high standard of service to parents, and above all to students.
Richard took over the company when Sara retired and is very passionate about the importance of education and offering the best quality tuition available.
With over twenty years’ experience as a teacher and senior leader in both mainstream schools and as a private tutor at Sutton Tutorials, he has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the 11 plus.

Sutton Tutorials hold a series of GL mock exams for children throughout the Midlands, regardless of whether they attend 11 plus tuition classes with us or not, in the months leading up to the 11 Plus exam.

Tutoring Prices FAQs
- All group tuition sessions for Year 4 – Year 9 last for 1 hour 15 minutes. The cost is £27.
- For younger children in Year 3: These group tuition sessions last for one hour and the cost is £25. These shorter sessions are reserved for younger children due to their concentration levels.
- One to one sessions last for one hour and the cost is £40. One to one sessions are reserved for GCSE and A-Level students only.
There are no registration fees. Simply pay as you go.
Notice must be given for missed sessions. Any sessions missed can be caught up at other available times in the week. If this is not practical, then there is a charge of half price for the missed lesson and the work must be picked up and completed in time for the next lesson. It is the duty and responsibility of both parent(s) and pupil to ensure attendance.

Parents can and do contact me about their worries and difficulties or for general advice at all times, and I try to accommodate them.
I am not a 9-5 tutor, nor do I just work during the teaching sessions. Each year I try to improve my services and to build on my ongoing experiences.
I keep records and notes so that I have a comprehensive understanding of each child. Above all, I try to make learning fun and to encourage a thirst for knowledge that will stand them in good stead, not just for the 11+, but for the future.
Yes, they are. Richard holds a Masters degree in education from Birmingham University and taught in mainstream schools for over twenty years. He is also an ex-examiner for Key Stage 2 tests and has over twenty years’ experience at private tuition.
Mike holds a maths degree from Warwick University and was Head of Mathematics at a local secondary school for twenty-five years and has been a marker for many GCSE and A-Level examination boards.
Amy qualified as a teacher from Leeds University in 2012. She has over fifteen years of experience of working in several schools in both the primary and secondary sectors. She currently works at a local grammar school in Sutton Coldfield as well as her tutor role at Sutton Tutorials.
Between the three of us, we have over eighty years of teaching experience!
