Numerical reasoning is the ability to reason worded problems at a comprehension level and then to apply simple numerical concepts to solve the problem. Our 11+ tuition helps prepare your child for the exam.
11+ Maths
The Maths section will test a child’s ability to use logical skills to interpret and analyse information given to them. It will focus on a mix of problem-solving and calculation questions.
11 Plus Maths and Numerical Reasoning do not go beyond the KS2 syllabus taught at school, but children may find questions on topics that they have not yet covered because the exam comes early in year six and 11 plus exam papers cover the whole KS2 syllabus.
Therefore, it is advisable to work ahead when in Year 4 and Year 5.
The level of mathematics involved is usually fairly straightforward; the challenge lies in understanding what the question is driving at and which mathematical methods are required to untangle the information.
Maths 11+ Test Preparation
The best way to prepare for the maths test is to practise a variety of different problem solving questions and scenarios. The child will then become familiar in sorting through information, discovering the relevant parts, as well as recognising which processes of mathematics is required in order to answer the problem.
For these tests speed and accuracy are called for and children will need to develop these skills as well as the core knowledge needed to answer the questions.
What is on a Maths Test?
It is difficult to give a comprehensive list of all the areas that will be tested, but it should be assumed that a child would need to have a secure understanding of the following areas of mathematics:
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division word problems
- Decimal word problems including money
- Fraction, decimal and percentage problems including equivalent conversions
- Interpreting graphs such as bar charts, pie charts, travel graphs
- Probability expressed as fractions
- Ratio and direct proportion
- Converting between units of measurement
- Scale problems
- Area, perimeter and volume
- Averages (mean, median, mode and range)
- Time problems and timetables

The 11+ exams consist of four main parts and we look at each of these specific topics to ensure your child is confident in all areas of the examination.
Pricing FAQ
- All group tuition sessions for Year 4 – Year 9 last for 1 hour 15 minutes. The cost is £27.
- For younger children in Year 3: These group tuition sessions last for one hour and the cost is £25. These shorter sessions are reserved for younger children due to their concentration levels.
- One to one sessions last for one hour and the cost is £40. One to one sessions are reserved for GCSE and A-Level students only.
There are no registration fees. Simply pay as you go.
Notice must be given for missed sessions. Any sessions missed can be caught up at other available times in the week. If this is not practical, then there is a charge of half price for the missed lesson and the work must be picked up and completed in time for the next lesson. It is the duty and responsibility of both parent(s) and pupil to ensure attendance.
